SUPPORT HORSEPOWER THE MUSEUM OF THE KING’S ROYAL HUSSARS

HorsePower, The Museum of The King’s Royal Hussars, and its prominent cavalry antecedent regiments, is currently undergoing a modernisation and refurbishment process. HorsePower opened at Peninsula Barracks, Winchester, in 2005, but there has been a regimental museum here since 1980. Since the Museum was last updated 20 years ago, and with the acquisition of the 14th/20th collection, it is crucial for us to redevelop. The Regimental history is impressively vast, and it is important to us that we create a museum space in which it can adequately be displayed.

We are currently in the middle of a fundraising appeal to generate the monies necessary for such a project. Our goal is to raise £400,000 by March 2026. This will be put towards the development of the museum space, allowing us to update infrastructure, lighting, display cases, and much more. It is essential for us to be able to display all the antecedent regiments and continue sharing the stories of The King’s Royal Hussars to the public.

Much of Major Pillinger’s uniform, photograph albums, pictures and medals were donated to the museum in 1983, when Lieutenant-Colonel Peter Upton was setting up the display. Since that time the Pillinger family has been enthusiastic supporters of the museum.

As of January 2025, we have closed to begin the first stages of our redevelopment programme. At present building work is underway to adapt and redevelop the planned exhibition spaces for the modern regiment and backwards towards World War Two.  We plan to have this first phase completed by April 2025, and we will be undertaking further fundraising efforts across the next year to facilitate the next stages in our modernisation plans.
